Kolsai, Kaindy lakes and Charyn Canyon
(2 days)
Kolsai and Kaindy Lakes are among the absolute must-see natural wonders of Kazakhstan — a journey where landscapes change dramatically within a single day. This tour is perfect for travelers who love mountain scenery, turquoise alpine lakes, hidden natural gems, and the raw beauty of canyons and semi-desert terrain.
The adventure begins early in the morning as you head east from Almaty toward the Tian Shan Mountains. Your first stop is Kolsai Lake, often called the “Pearl of the Northern Tian Shan.” Surrounded by pine forests and snow-capped peaks, the lake offers serene views, fresh mountain air, and time to walk along the shore or enjoy optional horse riding.
The true highlight of the tour is the legendary Kaindy Lake — one of the most unusual lakes in the world. Formed after a powerful earthquake in 1910, a landslide dammed the river and flooded an entire pine forest. Today, the pale turquoise water reveals tree trunks rising straight out of the lake, while beneath the surface lies an intact underwater forest. The scene feels surreal and unforgettable.
On the way back to Almaty, you’ll stop at Charyn Canyon, often compared to the Grand Canyon for its dramatic rock formations and vast semi-desert landscapes. The contrast between alpine lakes and canyon scenery makes this journey especially impressive.
This long but rewarding day offers an incredible variety of nature, culture, and landscapes — all in one unforgettable tour.
